In a company as busy as Renlaw, it’s easy for things like team building to end up always on the “get to it later” pile.
But if you want to build a company that operates smoothly and works efficiently and effectively, you need to understand that you are only as strong as the team you are built on. Which means that every now and then you need to step away from the machines and reconnect with each other as people.
Last Friday afternoon Renlaw did just that.
We laid down the tools (and our laptops) and got stuck in to some seriously sticky team building! With teams made up of people who don’t ordinarily work together, we pulled out our planning, engineering and physics skills and got to work!
The Challenge: To be the team to build the tallest free-standing tower using only marshmallows and raw spaghetti.
The Creative: Top Notch.
The Execution: Inspired.
The Results: Hilarious!
What was most important though (aside from the delicious rotis we had for lunch) was that we listened to each other, had fun together, and collaborated together on a human level.
One of the things that makes Renlaw as successful as it is, is our ability to pull together as a team. We have an attitude of “How can we make it better” rather than “Who’s fault is this”.
“How can I help my team” rather than, “how can I take credit for this”.
“A team is a group of people who trust each other.” – Simon Sinek
The management team works with the philosophy that a good manager is someone who ensures that every member of their team has what they need to be able to do their best work. That doesn’t always look like you’d expect it to.
If your team is struggling, you need to look at why. If your team can’t comfortably talk to you, you’ll never find out.
So! We understand the importance of getting together and reconnecting from time to time.
All in all it was a great afternoon, a good mental refresh, and an opportunity to remember how much we all enjoy working together.
