Yesterday morning the Renlaw team had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Nicola Buchan for an in-house wellness session focused on long-term health, lifestyle, and chronic illness awareness.

The session was relaxed, engaging, and incredibly informative – giving our team the opportunity to reflect on their own health, ask questions, and walk away with practical knowledge.

 A Team Conversation About Health

Dr. Buchan shared some fascinating insights around chronic illnesses – highlighting research that shows that even if you have a family history of an illness – only around 15% of the chance of these conditions affecting you are inherited, while the remaining 85% is influenced by lifestyle choices. You can literally change the game by making healthy choices.

She spoke about the importance of diet, mental health, and daily habits in managing and reducing the risk of conditions through the choices we make every day. What we eat, how active we are, how we manage stress – all of it plays a role in preventing chronic conditions like:

  • High blood pressure
  • Cholesterol imbalances
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Certain cancers
  • Mental health challenges

It was a reminder that even small changes in diet and lifestyle can make a big impact. The team found the discussion thought-provoking and relevant, particularly in today’s fast-paced working world.

In open and interactive conversations we discussed ways to incorporate exercises and stretching into our daily lives, how we can keep our stress levels in check, and there was even a great suggestion to do a bit of gardening to keep the fresh veg happening in our homes.

Getting Practical: Screenings & Check-Ins

Dr. Buchan also gave a few pointers on what routine tests we can ask for when visiting our GP or day clinic – something many of us don’t always think about. Throughout the morning, she took blood pressure and blood sugar readings for team members who were keen to get a quick health check-in.

One-on-One Chats & A Welcoming Environment

The session wasn’t all talk, there was plenty of room for private, one-on-one conversations with Dr. Buchan for those who had personal questions or wanted to discuss something more specific.

The relaxed, conversational style made it easy for the team to participate and ask questions, and the feedback from staff has been incredibly positive.

Putting People First

At Renlaw, we’re proud to support the wellbeing of our team – not just through health and safety measures, but through real conversations and opportunities to engage with trusted professionals.

This was a great initiative that brought the team together in a meaningful way, and we’re grateful to Dr. Nicola Buchan for sharing her time and expertise with us.

Stay sharp. Stay healthy. Stay human.
Here’s to more sessions like this in the future.
